Instructions for Fixing Lines When Scanning or Making Copies

If you are experiencing lines or streaks in your scanned images or copies, the issue may be due to dirt or debris on the slit glass (also known as the scanner glass). Follow these steps to clean the slit glass effectively:

Materials Needed

  • Lint-free microfiber cloth

  • Glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol

  • Soft, dry cloth (for drying)

  • Optional: Cotton swabs (for hard-to-reach areas)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions

Step 1: Power Off the Machine

Before starting the cleaning process, ensure that the scanner or copier is powered off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.

Step 2: Open the Scanner Cover

Gently lift the scanner cover to access the slit glass. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to avoid damaging any components.

Step 3: Inspect the Slit Glass (the thin piece of glass running front to back on the left)

Check the slit glass for any visible dirt, smudges, or debris. This will help you identify which areas need attention.

Step 4: Apply Cleaning Solution

Lightly spray a small amount of glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol onto a lint-free microfiber cloth. Do not spray directly onto the glass to avoid excess liquid seeping into the machine.

Step 5: Wipe the Slit Glass

Using the dampened cloth, gently wipe the slit glass in a circular motion. Be sure to cover the entire surface, paying special attention to any areas with visible marks.

Step 6: Dry the Glass

Take a soft, dry cloth and wipe the glass again to remove any remaining moisture and prevent streaks.

Step 7: Clean Hard-to-Reach Areas

If there are any difficult spots or edges, use a cotton swab lightly moistened with the cleaning solution to clean those areas.

Step 8: Close the Scanner Cover

Once the slit glass is clean and dry, carefully close the scanner cover.

Step 9: Power On the Machine

Plug the machine back in and power it on. Perform a test scan or copy to ensure that the lines have been eliminated.

Additional Tips

  • Regularly clean the slit glass to prevent buildup of dirt and debris.

  • Avoid using paper towels or rough fabrics, as they can scratch the glass surface.

  • If lines persist after cleaning, check for other potential issues, such as worn-out printer heads or toner cartridges.

By following these instructions, you should be able to eliminate lines in your scanned images or copies caused by dirty slit glass.
